Petrified Dunes Overview

Snow Canyon State Park is home to some of the most beautiful hiking trails in St. George. One of the most well-known and visited is the Petrified Dunes Trail. This trail gives you an incredible view of the nearly 200-million-year-old sand dunes and introduces you to a whole new world of outdoor activities!

The Petrified Dunes Trail in Snow Canyon is a hiking adventure that takes you into gorgeous, ancient dunes. The whole trip is just 1.2 miles roundtrip, but the trail is rocky, narrow, and features sections of slick rock. But while you’re on the trail, you’ll have plenty of petrified dunes to climb on and explore. Set aside some time to enjoy the view!

What to Expect

Expect to see geological wonders, blue sky, and even the occasional Gila monster on the Petrified Dunes Trail in Snow Canyon.

When to Go

Snow Canyon State Park does not get much shade, and the Petrified Dunes Trail is no different. This unique trail is best tackled in the morning or evening and with regular application of sunscreen.

Park Entry Fees

As one of Utah’s many state parks, there is a cost to enter.

What to Pack

The right packing list makes all the difference for outdoor adventures. We recommend bringing:

  • Water
  • Sunglasses
  • Sunscreen
  • Hiking footwear
  • Did we mention water?

Snow Canyon gets a lot of sun, meaning you’ll want plenty of shade and water. Aside from bringing more water than you think you could handle (you might surprise yourself!), we highly recommend exploring Snow Canyon and the Petrified Dunes Trail with shade protection, like hats and light, long-sleeve shirts.

Directions to the Trailhead

In a vehicle, from our location, you can find the Snow Canyon Overlook by taking the following steps:

  • Go north on Winchester Drive
  • Take a left on Hawkeye Road and stay on it for about 2000 feet
  • Take a left onto W 5745 N and then an immediate right onto UT-18 northbound
  • After about two miles, turn left into Snow Canyon State Park.
  • Continue along the park road until you see signs for the Petrified Dunes trailhead.

On an ebike, we recommend following the Snow Canyon Loop until it intersects with the Petrified Dunes Trailhead!
