Cycling for Beginners

Where to Get Started

If you’re new to cycling, you’ve just embraced a wonderful form of exercise that works your body while also allowing you to explore your surrounding area. As you get started with cycling, there are a few things you should know. Following these tips will help you have a good time on your ride.

What to Wear

To get started, you want to dress for success. Wear some comfortable clothes for your ride. They shouldn’t be too restrictive. Make sure you account for the weather so you aren’t too hot or too cold. On any bike ride, it’s essential that you have a helmet. Make sure your helmet fits your head properly. When purchasing a helmet, you can look online to find sizing guides to help you. On your ride, you can also wear additional gear to make you more comfortable. Sunglasses can help block out the sun so your vision isn’t impaired. Some cyclists like to wear padded shorts to avoid any pain from sitting down for long periods of time.

What to Eat

Before your ride, you want to fuel up properly. However, you also need to bring some food along with you. This is especially true if you’re going on a longer ride. Stick with convenient snacks that provide you with plenty of energy. Granola bars and protein bars are great options. You can even bring a few pieces of fruit. Bananas are an especially good option because they provide you with energy and they come with their own package. In addition to some fuel, make sure you bring plenty of water and stay hydrated throughout your ride.

How to Prepare

Not everyone can hop on a bike and go for an intense ride. If you want to have a positive experience, it’s a good idea to prepare yourself. Your arm and leg muscles will be under the most strain while riding. In the days before your ride, you can pay special attention to working these muscles. This will help you avoid being sore beforehand. It’s also a good idea to improve your cardio and endurance. If you’re conditioned well, you won’t get as tired and you won’t have to deal with being sore or uncomfortable afterward.
